1. Introduction

The Business

The envisioned enterprise is a modern cyber café, designed to provide high-speed internet access, computer services, and a comfortable environment for browsing, gaming, studying, and various forms of digital work. The cyber café will feature state-of-the-art computer stations equipped with the latest software and hardware to cater to a wide range of digital needs. Alongside core services, the café will offer refreshments, such as coffee, tea, and snacks, to enhance the customer experience.

Location

The chosen location for the cyber café is a 15’ x 25’ shop lot situated in Ayer Keroh Melaka. The shop is conveniently located near educational institutions and commercial areas, making it easily accessible to students, professionals, and casual visitors. The proximity to these areas ensures a steady flow of potential customers seeking a place to connect, learn, and relax.

Target Market

The target market for the cyber café includes:

Students: Students and young adults seeking internet access for gaming, education, and social media.

Young Professionals: Professionals requiring a temporary workspace with reliable internet connectivity

Gamers: The gaming community is a lucrative market segment, seeking high-performance computers and a lag-free environment to enjoy multiplayer online games.

Casual Users: This group includes walk-ins who might need to use the internet casually for browsing, checking emails, or printing documents.

2. Proposed hardware and software:

Computers:

12 Desktops with:

· Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor (AMD Ryzen 5 3600) - RM250 each

· 8GB DDR5 RAM - RM120 each

· 256GB SSD - RM230 each

· Nvidia GTX 1650 graphics card (for gaming PCs) - RM700 each

· 19-inch Full HD monitor – RM350 each

· Keyboard and mouse - RM150 each

Peripherals and Network:

· Wireless router -RM150

· Switches and cabling - RM300

· 2 Printers - RM350

· Webcams and headsets (optional) – RM70/unit

Total cost for running the business is approximately RM23740

· Windows 10/11 operating system pre-installed on all computers

· Microsoft Office suite

3. Proposed network topology and design

Networking Devices:

1.Router: Connects the cyber café network to the Internet.

2.Switch(es): Connects all the PCs and other devices, enabling communication within the network.

3.Firewall (Hardware/Software): Protects the network from external threats.

4.Wireless Access Point (WAP): Provides Wi-Fi access for mobile devices.

5.Modem: Modulates and demodulates signals for communication over cable or DSL.

6.Network Attached Storage (NAS): For centralized storage and backups.

7.Computers/Workstations: For client use.

8.Printer: For client printing needs.

Topology:

Star topology:

Given the size and efficiency, a star topology would work best. The router acts as the central hub, connected to switches, access points, and systems.

· Scalability: It allows for easier scalability, accommodating additional devices without disrupting the entire network.

· Performance: Generally offers better performance compared to Bus Topology due to reduced chances of data collisions.

· Fault Isolation: If a cable or device fails, it's easier to pinpoint and fix the issue without affecting the entire network.

Communication Media:

· Wired Connections: CAT6 Ethernet cables for all PCs for speed and reliability.

· Wireless Connections: Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) for mobile devices and laptops.

Detailed Explanation of Components:

a. Router:

Function: Directs traffic between the local network and the internet.

Location: Near the modem and ideally central to the switch and the WAP for efficient cabling.

b. Switch:

Function: Connects all the devices on the local network, allowing them to communicate.

Location: Centrally located to minimize cable lengths.

c. Firewall:

Function: Monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules.

Location: Integrated with the router or as a standalone device between the router and the switch.

d. Wireless Access Point (WAP):

Function: Provides wireless connectivity to laptops, smartphones, and tablets.

Location: Central to the café area for optimal wireless coverage.

e. Network Attached Storage (NAS):

Function: Centralized location for storage and backups.

Location: Secure and out of the way, as it does not need to be accessed directly by clients.

f. Computers/Workstations:

Function: The primary devices used by clients for cyber café services.

Location: Evenly distributed throughout the shop to utilize space efficiently and ensure comfortable access for clients.

4. IP addressing

Calculation of 26/ Subnet:

1.Choosing a private IP Range : 192.168.1.0/24

2.Subnetting : the 24 subnet has 256 address.Subnetting it into /26 will create 4 subnets each with 64 addresses.

3.Subnet mask : a /26 subnet has a subnet mask of 255.255.255.192

· Binary : 11111111.11111111.11111111.11000000

· Decimal : 255.255.255.192

Calculation of network address, broadcast address & host address range for whole network :

1.Network address : 192.168.1.0

2.Broadcast address : 192.168.1.63

3.The Cyber Café's network address : 192.168.1.0.

4.The Cyber Café's broadcast address: 192.168.1.63.

5.The Cyber Café's Usable Host Address Range : 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.62.

5. Types of Internet access

a) Unifi Fiber:

· Type : Fiber optic broadband

· Usage: Ideal for high definition streaming, online gaming, and large files downloads/uploads

· Coverage : Widely open in that area can provide best signal coverage across the entire building.

· Bandwith : Offers high speed options ranging from 30Mbps to 500 Mbps

· Cost : Affordable with plans starting from RM180

6. Conclusion.

Establishing a cyber café in this 15' x 25' shop lot is feasible with a moderate initial investment of approximately RM24,000. By targeting the right audience, providing high-quality services, and employing effective marketing strategies, the business can achieve profitability within a reasonable timeframe. However, success depends on careful planning, cost control, and adaptability to changing market demands.
